Immune Strengthening Strategies

Immune Strengthening Strategies are very important at times like this when the whole world is reeling under the impact of the novel flu virus named COVID-19 . This corona virus has forced most countries in the world into a lock down in order to cope with the spread and/or stop further community spread and death. Here are a few things we can do to strengthen our immune response

  1. Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water. Health professionals will normally ask you to take at least eight glasses of water.
  2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and other immune boosting foods. Citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, limes, tangerines and grapefruits are chock full of the super anti-oxidant Vitamin C. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells which are key to fighting infections and defending the body. Other Vitamin C rich foods are paw-paw and red bell pepper. Red bell pepper has twice as much Vitamin C as citrus fruits and also has a high content of beta carotene. Green vegetables which are not overcooked are also great immune boosters as well as foods that decrease inflammation like ginger and turmeric. Garlic is rich in sulfur containing compounds that boost immunity while almonds is rich in Vitamin E, another great anti-oxidant.
  3. Get some sunshine. Vitamin D which you can get from early morning sun helps to regulate the immune system and boost the body’s defense against diseases.
  4. Anti oxidant supplements are helpful when you don’t get enough from food. Anti-oxidants protect cells from harmful molecules called free radicals thus boosting immune function. Some research studies have shown that 500mg of Vitamin C supplement may even reduce the risk of heart disease. Other vitamins like Vitamin E are important in regulating and maintaining immune system function. Zinc (11mg for men and 8mg for women) helps immune function too. Alternative herbal immune boosters include propolis, echinacea, elderberry and medical mushrooms- shitake, cordyceps.
  5. Get Active or Exercise more. Exercise increases circulation, which promotes the elimination of toxins and helps to move immune cells throughout your blood stream more quickly. It can also reduce stress as well as help you to lose some weight. This is important to achieve if you are obese because obesity is one of the greatest risk factor to almost every disease.
  6. Get enough sleep because medical research shows that there’s a strong connection between good sleep and good immunity.
  7. Relax and Decrease stress. Stress hormones suppress your immune function. Make a conscious effort to De-Stress.
  8. Do not smoke or stay where people are smoking, breathing clean air helps a lot.
  9. Limit your alcohol intake.
  10. Connect with a higher being. When people believe in God or a higher being, it takes some of the stress off, knowing that you can call on an Almighty One who knows what medical science does not know, who you can trust to hand over everything to, who gives you peace and tranquility. That positive energy comes with a healing force.
  11. Specifically for the flu virus, practice good hygiene, wash your hands very often, carry around an alcohol based hand sanitizer,  maintain social distancing, avoid large crowds, cover your cough, don’t shake hands. Above all, stay at home if you have a cold and do not spread the virus.
